The partnership

Overview

The University of Ghana, at Legon near Accra, is Ghana's oldest university. The two universities are linked through a shared programme rather than a bilateral agreement: no memorandum of understanding between them has been published by either university, and each university's published list of partners omits the other. What is confirmed is a shared programme. Both universities host World Bank Africa Centres of Excellence. MOAUM's Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) and the University of Ghana's West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) are both founding members of Food for West Africa (FOOD4WA), a network of agricultural centres of excellence whose stated aims are to connect the faculty and students of its member centres, coordinate food-security research and share results through conferences and symposia. This is a network link between two centres, not an exchange agreement between the two universities. There is also a documented point of institutional contact: the University of Ghana's Regionalisation Strategy for 2023-2027 records that a former Vice-Chancellor of Benue State University advised its drafting committee on how BSU developed its own regional strategy. Nigeria is one of the ten priority countries for regional engagement named in that University of Ghana strategy. Because no partnership-specific route exists, a MOAUM student or scholar interested in the University of Ghana must use its ordinary routes for international applicants: graduate degree admission through the School of Graduate Studies, a semester or year as a visiting (non-degree) student through the International Programmes Office, research affiliation through the Office of Research, Innovation and Development, or a direct approach to a department as a visiting scholar. These are self-funded general routes and are not benefits of any partnership.

How it began: No memorandum of understanding or other bilateral agreement between MOAUM/Benue State University and the University of Ghana could be confirmed from any official source. The only link confirmed is through a shared programme: both universities host World Bank Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE Impact), and MOAUM's Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) and the University of Ghana's West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) are both founding members of the Food for West Africa (FOOD4WA) network of agricultural centres of excellence, which WACCI's website says was officially established in December 2021.

Nature of the collaboration

Areas of collaboration

Confirmed only through a shared programme, not a bilateral partnership. The Association of African Universities' ACE Impact directory lists CEFTER at Benue State University and three centres at the University of Ghana (WACCI, WACCBIP and the West Africa Genetic Medicine Centre). FOOD4WA's own website and a University of Ghana (WACCI) news item both name CEFTER and WACCI among the network's seven founding centres; FOOD4WA's stated objectives are to establish a network between faculty and students of the participating centres, to coordinate research on food-security themes, and to share results through conferences and symposia. In December 2022 a FOOD4WA assembly was held on the sidelines of a congress organised by CEFTER in Makurdi. Separately, the University of Ghana's Five-Year Regionalisation Strategy (2023-2027) records that a former Vice-Chancellor of Benue State University, Prof. Charity Angya, gave a virtual consultation session to the UG committee on how BSU had developed its own regional strategy. Neither university names the other as a partner. The University of Ghana's International Programmes Office publishes its exchange partners by country: the Nigerian entries are the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, the University of Calabar, the University of Ibadan, the University of Ilorin, the University of Nigeria and the University of Abuja. MOAUM's International Partnerships and MoUs page does not list the University of Ghana, and neither does the older Benue State University list of MoUs. Benue State University's Institutional Regional Strategy (August 2022) names Ghana as a priority country but the Ghanaian institution it lists as a partner is the University of Cape Coast, not the University of Ghana.

Partnership history

  1. 2014

Benue State University sent delegations of senior faculty to several countries including Ghana to seek collaboration on joint research and training, faculty exchange and regional student recruitment (as recorded in BSU's Institutional Regional Strategy of August 2022). The document does not name the University of Ghana; the Ghanaian partner it names is the University of Cape Coast.

  2. 2021-11-09

The Association of African Universities' ACE Impact site describes FOOD4WA as one of eight thematic networks set up under the ACE Impact project, with the objective of establishing a network between faculty and students of the participating centres.

  3. 2021-12

FOOD4WA officially established, according to the University of Ghana's WACCI; founding centres include CEFTER (Benue State University) and WACCI (University of Ghana).

  4. 2022-12-08

FOOD4WA reports (article dated 8 December 2022) that a network assembly was held on the sidelines of the second edition of a congress organised by CEFTER, Benue State University, Makurdi; WACCI of Ghana is listed among the seven member centres.

  5. Undated (recorded in the 2023-2027 strategy)

The University of Ghana's Five-Year Regionalisation Strategy (2023-2027) records a 45-minute virtual consultation session in which Prof. Charity Angya, former Vice-Chancellor of Benue State University, shared BSU's experience of developing its regionalisation strategy. The date of the session is not given in the passages read.

  6. 2024-11-08

University of Ghana (WACCI) news item on FOOD4WA names the Center for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER), Benue State University, Nigeria, and WACCI, University of Ghana, among the network's seven member centres.

For students, staff and departments

Student opportunities

No agreement between MOAUM and the University of Ghana has been confirmed, and no partnership-specific route for MOAUM students to study, exchange or carry out research there has been verified. The only confirmed link is that MOAUM's CEFTER and the University of Ghana's WACCI belong to the same network of World Bank Africa Centres of Excellence (FOOD4WA). Students may use the University of Ghana's ordinary routes for international applicants, at their own cost.

Academic intake: 2026/2027 academic year · Next expected cycle: Not published.

How to apply

The applicant applies directly to the University of Ghana and pays a non-refundable application processing fee of US$55. The University states that no application is processed without proof of payment, or without the certificate or official transcript.

  1. Step 1: Confirm eligibility

Master's: a good first degree, preferably second class lower or better (or a final grade point average of at least 2.0) in a relevant field; applicants may be required to take an entrance examination and/or interview. PhD: a relevant master's degree from a recognised university, or a very good first degree (candidates admitted on a first degree take master's-level coursework first).

  2. Step 2: Wait for the next call

The 2026/2027 call has closed. Watch the University of Ghana's announcements and deadlines page for the next one.

  3. Step 3: Pay the application fee

US$55, non-refundable, paid by bank transfer or online as the University directs.

  4. Step 4: Apply on the international graduate portal

Upload degree certificates and transcripts in PDF, give details of three referees, and (for PhD) attach a research proposal of not more than four pages.

  5. Step 5: After admission: immigration

Nigerian citizens do not need a visa to enter Ghana, but a foreign national admitted to a Ghanaian institution is required by law to obtain a student residence permit. The University's International Programmes Office assists with the permit and the Non-Citizen Ghana Card.

A semester or year at the University of Ghana as a visiting (non-degree) student (general route)

For: Undergraduate · Postgraduate

The University of Ghana admits visiting undergraduate and graduate students from any university, whether or not that university has a bilateral agreement with it, provided the applicant meets its requirements and the application is endorsed by the home university's international office. Because MOAUM is not on the University of Ghana's published list of exchange partners, the lower partner-institution charges cannot be assumed: the non-partner charges, which include tuition, would be the ones to plan for. This is a self-funded general route.

How to apply

The student applies to the University of Ghana's International Programmes Office, but the application must be endorsed by the international office of the home university. At MOAUM that endorsement would have to come from the office responsible for linkages; confirm with the Centre for Advancement and Linkages who signs. This is not an exchange place: there is no fee waiver.

  1. Step 1: Confirm eligibility

Minimum CGPA of 2.5; at least two semesters of transcripts; not in your final semester.

  2. Step 2: Get MOAUM's agreement

Ask your Head of Department about credit recognition, then ask the Centre for Advancement and Linkages about endorsing the form.

  3. Step 3: Complete the visiting-student application form

The form is published on the International Programmes Office visiting students page.

  4. Step 4: Pay the US$55 application fee

Paid by wire transfer to the University's account as given on the page; keep the receipt.

  5. Step 5: Email the application

Send the completed and endorsed form, photograph, certified transcript and fee receipt to nspip@ug.edu.gh.

  6. Step 6: After admission

Housing is provided at the International Students Hostel. Foreign nationals must obtain a Non-Citizen card (US$120 a year); the page says the cost of the residence permit is included in the fees, and the International Programmes Office assists with both.
