The partnership

Overview

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is a public university in South Africa's Eastern Cape with campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City (East London) and Komani. On parts of its own website it now styles itself iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu. Its Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is based in Mthatha. MOAUM's Centre for Advancement and Linkages records the relationship as ongoing since 2024. According to MOAUM, it covers research collaboration, staff and student exchange and joint research-grant submissions, and a WSU staff member holds a Visiting Professorship at MOAUM, teaching in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science and the Faculty of Clinical Sciences. The practical benefit that is verified from MOAUM's side is teaching and research support delivered at MOAUM by the Visiting Professor. No procedure, quota, funding or deadline for a MOAUM student to go to WSU on exchange has been published by either university, and WSU's website does not list MOAUM (or Benue State University) among its partners. A MOAUM graduate or scholar may still use WSU's ordinary routes, which are open to any eligible international applicant and are not a benefit of the partnership: WSU's online application for postgraduate study, which for international applicants requires a SAQA evaluation of foreign qualifications, a South African study visa and South African medical cover.

How it began: Not verified. MOAUM's International Partnerships and MoUs page lists the relationship under the year 2024 with the status ONGOING (other entries on the same page are marked SIGNED). No signing date, signatories or agreement text were found on either university's website, so it is not confirmed whether a formal memorandum of understanding has been signed.

Nature of the collaboration

Areas of collaboration

MOAUM's own website (International Partnerships and MoUs page, Centre for Advancement and Linkages) describes the relationship as research collaboration and staff/student exchange, joint research-grant submissions, and a Visiting Professorship held at MOAUM by a Walter Sisulu University staff member who teaches in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science and the Faculty of Clinical Sciences. Walter Sisulu University's website does not name Benue State University or MOAUM. Its Partnerships page and its Internationalization page each publish a list of partner institutions; the Nigerian institutions named there are Bowen University, the University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Rivers State University, the University of Ibadan and Port Harcourt University. The relationship is therefore confirmed by MOAUM only.

Student opportunities

No direct application route for MOAUM students under this partnership has been verified. MOAUM records staff/student exchange with Walter Sisulu University, but neither university has published a procedure, quota, funding or deadline, so students cannot currently apply for an exchange place. Enquiries should go through your Head of Department to the Centre for Advancement and Linkages.

How to apply

There is no published application route. Students cannot apply to WSU for an exchange place on the strength of this relationship. Staff and research students interested in collaboration should raise it through their Head of Department and the Centre for Advancement and Linkages.

  1. Step 1: Talk to your department first

Discuss the proposed research link or visit with your supervisor and Head of Department.

  2. Step 2: Go through the Centre for Advancement and Linkages

Ask the Centre whether an exchange or research visit can be arranged under the WSU relationship, and whether MOAUM must nominate you.

  3. Step 3: If a visit is agreed, meet South Africa's entry rules

Any stay in South Africa needs the correct visa. Holders of ordinary Nigerian passports are not visa-exempt. See the general WSU route below for the official study-visa requirements.

Funding not specified.

No funding for exchange or research visits under this relationship is published by either university.

Visa, travel and stay

According to the South African Department of Home Affairs list of visa-exempt countries, Nigeria's exemption applies to diplomatic, official and service passports only; ordinary passport holders need a visa. The type of visa depends on the purpose and length of the visit.

Application Deadline: For the 2027 academic year WSU told international applicants (undergraduate and postgraduate) to apply before 30 September 2026; that date has passed. WSU's How to Apply page gives 30 September 2026 as the international deadline and 31 October 2026 as the general deadline. Its postgraduate page gives 30 September for the Faculty of Health Sciences and 31 October for other faculties, and says late-application fees apply after the closing dates. Anyone still hoping to apply for 2027 should confirm with WSU before doing anything else.

Academic intake: 2027 academic year · Next expected cycle: Not published. WSU's How to Apply page states that applications for the 2027 intake opened on 1 June 2026.

How to apply

The applicant applies directly to WSU through its online application portal. MOAUM does not nominate and WSU does not need to approve anything beforehand. WSU states that meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Application fee: WSU's pages disagree. The International Students page says the online application is a free service with no fee; the How to Apply page states a non-refundable application fee of R100. Confirm with WSU.

  1. Step 1: Choose a programme and check the faculty's requirements

WSU publishes postgraduate admission requirements faculty by faculty. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

  2. Step 2: Have your qualifications evaluated by SAQA

WSU requires international postgraduate applicants to have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The South African government's service page says only the qualification holder may apply, online, with certified copies, an identity document and proof of payment in rand; normal processing is 30 working days, with faster paid options.

  3. Step 3: Apply online to WSU

Use WSU's online application portal and upload the documents WSU lists. WSU accepts online applications only.

  4. Step 4: Wait for a letter of acceptance

The study visa cannot be applied for without WSU's official letter confirming acceptance or provisional acceptance and the duration of the course.

  5. Step 5: Take out South African medical cover

The Department of Home Affairs requires proof of medical cover with a medical scheme registered in South Africa; WSU also requires valid health insurance or medical aid.

  6. Step 6: Apply for a study visa

Holders of ordinary Nigerian passports need a visa. In Nigeria, South African visa applications are lodged through VFS Global, which lists Study as a long-term visa type for study longer than three months.

Application checklist
  • Qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)
  • Certified copy of passport
  • Grade 12 (school-leaving) results
  • Certified copy of academic record

No scholarship for Nigerian or MOAUM applicants was found on WSU's website. WSU's Fees and Financial Support page describes NSFAS as a South African government scheme for poor undergraduate students and links to a list of other bursaries; eligibility of international students is not stated there.

Financial requirements: Tuition and any international-student charges are not stated on the WSU web pages opened. The Department of Home Affairs requires proof of financial means for the study visa.

Visa, travel and stay

Study visa requirements published by the Department of Home Affairs include: completed and signed application form; passport; an official letter from the institution confirming acceptance or provisional acceptance and the duration of the course; proof of medical cover with a medical scheme registered in South Africa; proof of financial means; a medical report not older than six months; police clearance from countries of residence of more than 12 months; a return ticket or written undertaking on repatriation costs. A study visa holder may work part-time for not more than 20 hours a week. Ordinary Nigerian passport holders are not visa-exempt. In Nigeria applications are lodged through VFS Global.

Official visa information (dha.gov.za) (opens in a new tab)

Accommodation and insurance: Medical cover with a scheme registered in South Africa is compulsory for the study visa and for WSU enrolment. For: Academic staff · PhD

WSU's Internationalization page names international mobility (exchanges, research collaboration and academic visits) as a focus area, but WSU publishes no application procedure, form, fee or deadline for incoming visiting researchers. A visit would have to be arranged directly with a WSU host and, for MOAUM staff, through the Centre for Advancement and Linkages.

Confirm the correct category with the South African mission before applying.
