The partnership

Overview

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is Germany's funding organisation for international academic exchange. It is not a partner university and has no memorandum of understanding with the University on record; the University's link with DAAD is that its Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) was a host institution in DAAD's In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa. Under that programme DAAD, with funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), offered scholarships for the M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Food Chemistry at CEFTER. DAAD's own calls exist for the intakes of 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. In-Country scholarships were for candidates studying in their home country or country of residence; In-Region scholarships were for candidates from other Sub-Saharan African countries. Applicants had to apply both for admission at CEFTER and for the scholarship on the DAAD portal; the University ranked candidates and an independent DAAD selection committee made the final decision. The most recent call, for the intake beginning in October 2026, closed on 27 November 2025. As of 6 October 2026 DAAD's scholarship database does not list the University among the calls open until 12 November 2026 or among those to be published in spring 2027, so there is no open or announced round at CEFTER. This page will be updated if DAAD or CEFTER publishes a new call. Apart from the CEFTER scheme, DAAD has general programmes for study and research in Germany that eligible Nigerian graduates, doctoral candidates and academics can apply for on their own. They are listed below as general routes. They are not benefits of the University's relationship with DAAD, and the University does not nominate candidates for them.

How it began: The University (then Benue State University) was accepted by DAAD as a host institution of the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme Sub-Saharan Africa for two CEFTER programmes, M.Sc. and Ph.D. Food Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry. DAAD's calls refer to an Affiliate Agreement between the host university and DAAD. This is participation in a DAAD funding programme, not a memorandum of understanding with a partner university; no MoU with DAAD was found.

Nature of the collaboration

Areas of collaboration

DAAD is a German funding organisation, not a university. From the intake of October 2023 to the intake of October 2026 DAAD published yearly calls for scholarships tenable at the University's Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) for the Master in Food Chemistry and the PhD in Food Chemistry, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Each call offered up to three In-Country scholarships (for people studying in their home country or country of residence) and six or seven In-Region scholarships (for nationals or permanent residents of other Sub-Saharan African countries) per degree level. DAAD paid tuition directly to the University and a monthly scholarship and allowances to the scholar. The last call (intake 2026) closed on 27 November 2025. On 6 October 2026 DAAD's scholarship database lists the calls that are open until 12 November 2026 and the calls to be published in spring 2027; the University is not among them, the programme entry now describes Master studies only, and the only Nigerian host named is the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta. No call for a 2027 intake at the University has been published. Separately, DAAD runs general scholarship programmes for study and research in Germany that any eligible Nigerian graduate, doctoral candidate or academic may apply for; those do not depend on the University.

Application Deadline: Closed. The last call (intake 2026) closed on the DAAD portal on 27 November 2025. CEFTER's page gives 1 October to 27 November 2025 for admission applications and, in one sentence, 9 December 2025 for the DAAD portal; DAAD's own call says 27 November 2025.

Academic intake: October 2026 (last intake with a published call) · Programme period: Scholarship start usually 1 October 2026 for the last call · Next expected cycle: None announced. DAAD's database on 6 October 2026 (deadline 12 November 2026) does not list the University among open calls or among calls to be published in spring 2027.

How to apply

When calls were open the candidate applied personally in two places at the same time: for admission at CEFTER, and for the scholarship on the DAAD portal. The University did not apply on the candidate's behalf, but its pre-selection ranking of admitted candidates was taken into account by DAAD's independent selection committee, which made the final decision. Applications sent by any other channel were not considered. There is nothing to apply for at present.

  1. Step 1: Check whether a call exists

Look at DAAD's scholarship database entry for the In-Country/In-Region Programme Sub-Saharan Africa and at CEFTER's DAAD admission page. A scholarship application is only possible while DAAD lists a call for the University. None is listed on 6 October 2026.

  2. Step 2: Confirm eligibility (as in the last call)

Sub-Saharan African national or permanent resident; at least Second Class Upper Division or equivalent (candidates below that were not eligible); last university degree completed not more than six years before applying; no previous DAAD scholarship at the same level. CEFTER's own admission requirements also applied.

  3. Step 3: Apply for admission at CEFTER

Candidates applied for admission through CEFTER's admission portal within CEFTER's own dates. CEFTER's page stated a non-refundable application fee for Nigerian residents and no fee for non-Nigerian residents applying for the DAAD scholarship.

  4. Step 4: Apply for the scholarship on the DAAD portal

Candidates registered on the DAAD portal through the link in the call, completed the online form and uploaded the mandatory documents as PDF files before the portal closed at 24:00 Central European Time on the deadline day.

  5. Step 5: Selection

DAAD carried out a formal check of portal applications. Applications that met both the University's admission requirements and DAAD's formal criteria were assessed by an independent selection committee, taking the University's pre-selection ranking into account. The call for intake 2026 placed selection between April and September, with the decision about six months after the application process ended.

  6. Step 6: Start of scholarship

The scholarship became effective only once proof of admission from the University and proof of arrival at the host university had been submitted through the DAAD portal.

Funding and costs

Fully funded. What it covers: Tuition fees (paid by DAAD directly to the University), Monthly scholarship, Annual study and research allowance, Thesis publishing costs, Travel allowance (In-Region scholars only), Health insurance (In-Region scholars only).

Amounts in the 2026-intake calls (now closed): Master - 400 EUR a month In-Country, 500 EUR a month In-Region, study and research allowance 460 EUR a year, thesis publishing costs 400 EUR once. PhD - 500 EUR a month In-Country, 600 EUR a month In-Region, study and research allowance 920 EUR a year, thesis publishing costs 800 EUR once. Tuition, travel allowance and health insurance amounts were to be specified in the Letter of Award. The call warns that not every item in the host's fee structure may be covered in full, that no benefits are paid for family members, and that award was subject to BMZ funds. Scholars on research-based programmes were also encouraged to apply for a 3 to 6 month research stay in Germany within the scholarship period.

Financial requirements: No cost to apply on the DAAD portal is stated. CEFTER's page for the last call stated a non-refundable admission application fee of 10,000 naira for Nigerian residents and no fee for non-Nigerian residents applying for the DAAD scholarship. DAAD recommended bringing enough money for at least two months because the first payment can take time.

Visa, travel and stay

No visa is involved for Nigerian candidates studying at the University. In-Region scholars from other countries were responsible for their own valid travel documents; the calls do not describe Nigerian entry or residence formalities.

Accommodation and insurance: The monthly scholarship is described as covering accommodation, food and similar living costs. Health insurance was provided for In-Region scholars only. No University accommodation arrangement is stated in the calls.

Official contact

CEFTER (admission and programme questions): Prof. Sylvester Adejo, sadejo@bsum.edu.ng, as named in DAAD's last call. DAAD (scholarship questions): the contact person named in the last call was Ms. Iman Al-Rashdan, al-rashdan@daad.de; technical portal questions to portal@daad.de.
