The partnership

Overview

The University of Hildesheim is a foundation university in Lower Saxony, Germany, with about 8,000 students. Its Center for World Music is an ethnomusicological research centre that describes itself as an archive and laboratory, a place for research and study, and a meeting place for musicians. The Center has worked in West Africa for many years, including a research project on music archives in Nigeria and Ghana (2009 to 2014) and the DAAD-funded SDG Graduate School 'Performing Sustainability' with the University of Maiduguri and the University of Cape Coast (2016 to 2025). On 14 March 2024 a delegation from Benue State University, as the University was then called, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Center for World Music in Hildesheim. According to the University of Hildesheim, the first phase is the building of a sound archive with the University and the start of joint research; teaching and student exchanges are planned for the long term. This is an institutional agreement. Neither university has published an exchange programme, a scholarship or an application procedure under it. Students who are interested should ask the Centre for Advancement and Linkages whether any exchange place or project place exists before making plans. The University of Hildesheim's general routes for international students and doctoral candidates are open to eligible applicants with or without the agreement and are listed separately below.

How it began: A Memorandum of Understanding between Benue State University (now MOAUM) and the Center for World Music of the University of Hildesheim was signed at a ceremony at the Center for World Music in Hildesheim on 14 March 2024, in the presence of the University President, Prof. Dr. May-Britt Kallenrode. The University's own news says the President signed the memorandum and Benue State University countersigned it. The Benue State University delegation (13 to 15 March 2024) was Prof. Vitalis Vearumun Tarhule (Dean of the Graduate School), Prof. Elijah Terdoo Ikpanor (Director, Centre for Advancement and Linkages) and Dr. Shadrach Teryila Ukuma (Department of Theatre Arts).

Nature of the collaboration

Areas of collaboration

The University of Hildesheim describes the agreement as follows: in a first project phase a sound archive is to be built with Benue State University and research cooperations initiated; in the long term several teaching and student exchanges are planned. It names the Centre for African Heritage and Cultural Sustainability Studies at Benue State University as the unit concerned, and records the hope of the Benue delegation that the faculties for teacher education and psychology will also benefit. During the same visit the delegation discussed funding opportunities with the DAAD in Bonn, met Hildesheim's International Office, its Research and Transfer unit and the Vice-President for International Affairs, and met the Dommuseum Hildesheim about possible cooperation on cultural heritage. The link behind the agreement is documented: Dr. Shadrach Teryila Ukuma of the Department of Theatre Arts is an alumnus of the DAAD-funded SDG Graduate School 'Performing Sustainability. Cultures and Development in West Africa', which the Center for World Music ran with the University of Maiduguri and the University of Cape Coast from 2016 to 2025. Benue State University was not a partner institution of that graduate school. No official page publishes the text of the memorandum, an exchange quota, a call for applications or any activity under the agreement after March 2024.

Study level
Not specified for MOAUM. Hildesheim's exchange information covers its bachelor's and master's programmes.

Application method
Nomination by MOAUM is required

Application Deadline: Hildesheim's standing deadlines for students from outside the EU: nomination by the home university by 1 May (winter semester or full year) or 1 November (summer semester); the student's online application by 30 May or 30 November; the signed application and photo by 15 June or 15 December. The International Office web page gives 15 May and 15 November for nominations and 30 May and 30 November for the signed application; the January 2026 fact sheet is the more detailed and more recent document. These dates matter only if an exchange place exists.

Academic intake: Winter semester (lectures usually mid-October to mid-February) and summer semester (lectures usually mid-April to mid-July) · Next expected cycle: Summer semester 2027, for which the standing nomination deadline is 1 November 2026.

Before submitting an external application, contact the relevant MOAUM faculty or the office responsible for international linkages to confirm eligibility and whether institutional nomination is required.

How to apply

A student cannot apply to Hildesheim directly for an exchange place. The home university must nominate the student first; Hildesheim then sends the student a link to its online registration. No MOAUM nomination procedure for Hildesheim has been published.

  1. Step 1: Confirm that a place exists

Ask the Centre for Advancement and Linkages whether the agreement with Hildesheim currently includes exchange places for students, for which level and subject, and how MOAUM selects candidates.

  2. Step 2: Be nominated by MOAUM

Hildesheim's procedure: the partner university sends a nomination e-mail with the student's details, receives a confirmation from the International Office, and then completes an online nomination in Hildesheim's mobility portal.

  3. Step 3: Complete the online application

After the nomination the student automatically receives an e-mail with a link to the online registration, and sends the signed application form and a photo to incoming@uni-hildesheim.de by the deadline.

  4. Step 4: Apply for the visa

Apply for a German national visa for study through the German Missions in Nigeria. Hildesheim says nominated students receive an access code for VisaFlow, a support service for the visa application.

  5. Step 5: Arrive and enrol

Take part in the Welcome Week, enrol, show proof of health insurance, pay the semester contribution and register with the City of Hildesheim.
