The 7th Governing Council of Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), led by its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has successfully held its Inaugural retreat in Abuja from 1st to 4th August, 2026.
The retreat was convened to strengthen the effectiveness of Council as the apex policy-making body of the University and to provide strategic direction for good governance, institutional development and effective university administration.
In his welcome address, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Sir Paul Chukwuma, expressed appreciation to members of Council for their commitment to the service of the University. He noted that the retreat was not merely ceremonial but a strategic platform for reflection, alignment and the development of a shared vision for the University.
According to him, “As a Council, we are the apex policy-making body of this University. The quality of our governance will determine the quality of our University. This retreat therefore offers us a rare opportunity to align our vision, strengthen our synergy with Management, and lay a solid foundation for a University that is globally competitive, digitally driven, transparent and responsive to societal needs.”
At the end of extensive deliberations, Council resolved as follows:
Strengthening Governance and Communication.
Council reaffirmed its commitment to effective governance through improved communication and collaboration among Government, Council and Management, with a view to ensuring efficient administration and the attainment of the University's strategic objectives.
Revitalisation of ICT and Digital Transformation.
Council approved measures to revitalise the University's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit for improved service delivery. The measures include the provision of relevant facilities, engagement of appropriate personnel and activation of the ICT Board to provide effective oversight.
Council also directed the development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy to guide the responsible and ethical use of AI by staff and students.
Support for Innovation and Externally Funded Projects.
Council received a briefing from Dr. Joshua Attah, Coordinator of Special Projects at the National Universities Commission (NUC), on World Bank-funded projects and related opportunities.
Council reaffirmed its support for the Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) and other externally funded centres and projects. It further resolved to strengthen mechanisms for the sustainability of such projects and establish a central coordinating unit for externally funded projects to promote efficiency, accountability and transparency.
Enhanced Compliance and Capacity Building.
As part of efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and adherence to global best practices, Council resolved to engage relevant anti-corruption and regulatory agencies, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), for capacity-building programmes on financial management, procurement procedures and regulatory compliance.
The Council expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their continued support and reiterated its commitment to repositioning Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University for academic excellence, innovation, good governance and quality service delivery.
