Research Profile & Citation Policy
Issued by the Research Management Directorate and the University Library. Every member of academic staff is required to bring their public research profiles into line with this policy — it is what the Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities measures under its Openness and Excellence indicators.
Institutional email & domain consistency
Every researcher must use their official University email address — not a personal Gmail or Yahoo account — as the contact and verification address on Google Scholar, ORCID and OpenAlex. Webometrics filters out institutions whose top researchers lack a verified institutional email on Google Scholar, so an unverified profile does not count toward the University’s ranking.
Required email format
firstname.lastname@bsum.edu.ng
Contact the ICT Directorate if your official address does not follow this pattern.
Standardized institutional affiliation
Copy this exact wording into every journal submission, conference paper and external academic profile. Conflicting affiliation strings across your publications prevent citation-tracking crawlers from attributing your work to the University.

Dedicated, structured profile pages
Crawlable profile URL
Every researcher on the citation record is given a clean, indexable URL slug on the University’s own domain — e.g. /research/profiles/your-name — rather than a bio buried inside a departmental PDF.
Live publication feeds, not typed lists
Publication lists are not manually typed onto profile pages, since they go out of date. Profiles reserve a live-widget slot for an embedded ORCID or Scopus feed, installed by the ICT Directorate.
Direct repository linking
Every publication must link directly to its full-text PDF on the Open Access Institutional Repository, not to a paywalled external page. Webometrics rewards rich files (PDF, DOCX) hosted natively on the University’s own domain.
Public linking to external academic identifiers
Every profile page must carry clean, prominent, direct hyperlinks to these four external identifiers, grouped as clear visual anchors.
Google Scholar Profile
Crucial for the Webometrics Openness indicator.
ORCID iD
A permanent, unique digital identifier for the researcher.
OpenAlex Profile
Directly impacts the Excellence / Scholar indicator.
Scopus / Web of Science Author ID
Cross-references citation databases.
